Spray Paint Illustrations

We are working on a fun new assignment this week in my illustration class. It's a very fun and simple project that you can do yourself at home, so I thought I would tell you about it and show you the ones I made.

The supplies you will need are:
A bucket filled with water (the wider the better)
A few colors of regular spray paint
Watercolor Paper (I cut mine in half so the fit in the bucket better)
Paper Towels
Illustrating materials of your choice such as pencils, pens, markers, paint, etc.

What you do:
Step 1: Fill your bucket/container with water and go outside with it along with your watercolor paper, spray paint, and paper towels.

Step 2: Pick a few colors of spray paint to use for your first sheet (less is usually best for this project). Take your first color and spray it onto the water (not on the paper) in short bursts. The paint will stay on top of the water, which is good.

Step 4: Move on to your next color and spray it on the water. You will start to see neat designs appearing in your paint, so you can experiment with different ways of spraying to achieve the effect you want. Continue until you have sprayed all of the desired colors for your first page.

Step 5: Take your watercolor paper. Hold it flat -parallel to the water, and face down so you get the good texture on the side with the paint. Quickly Roll/dip the paper into the water, and remove.

Da da! It's that easy! Now let the dipped paper dry while you make more. Just make sure it doesn't blow away in the wind! :)

Step 6: Before spraying your next colors you will want to take a couple paper towels and quickly wipe the top of the water with it to get rid any paint that got left behind.

Step 7: Continue this same technique until you are happy with the amount of dipped/painted papers you have completed. Let these papers dry (I used a blow dryer to speed up the process.)

Step 8: Once your papers are dry you are ready to use them however you like. You can scan them into the computer and illustrate on top of them digitally, paint on top of them, draw on top with ink, etc. The possibilities are endless.

Hope you have fun trying out this fun project!

Here are a couple other tips on making these:
- Feel free to experiment with different ways of dipping the paper. The main thing is to dip fairly quickly, because you don't want to get your paper so wet that it falls apart.

- I would recommend scanning your painted papers into the computer before illustrating on them. This way you can print out copies of it to practice on so you don't ruin the original.

Today I finally started digitally illustrating my dancing gator design from back in May, so here is what I've accomplished so far. Obviously I am no where close to being done, but you can see the basic shapes and colors are starting to come together.

Fresh New Look

Jonathan worked a double shift today, so I decided to have an extreme website makeover day for MDStudio Online.

It took all day, but I think it was worth it! What do you think? Be sure to click on the "Contact" page for a surprise Spanky illustration!

The website no longer has shopping directly integrated into it anymore, but it does have links to my Zazzle & Etsy shops, fanpage, flickr, and more. So it's really just a good central place to go for MDStudio and my illustrations in general.

I also added a small portfolio to the site with some of my favorite illustrations from over the years. I want to make the portfolio look cooler, but that will have to be another day :)

I think this blog could also use an extreme makeover.. so stay tuned and hopefully things over here will begin to be much more fun and exciting!

Hallelujah for Spring Break!! :) Gotta love it

Well, I've been workin hard on my embroidered buttons for the feeling stitchy swap and now they are finally done! My partner is really into raccoons and deer, so I decided to do a woodland critters theme :) I hope she loves them as much as I do!

I've also been working on re-organizing my craft room. What do you think so far? If only I could paint the walls, then it would really be rockin! :)

As you may know, I am making my husband a recipe book for Christmas! He loves to cook, and so now he will be able to whip up anything his heart desires!
What do you think of the cover for the book? hehehe. I don't think he will mind all the girlieness as long as there are lots of yummy recipes inside! (at least i hope!) :)

Ah yes, and here is my final project for art class! It turned out alright, but not quite as awesome as all of the sketches and ideas that I had for it. Maybe I should remake it in Illustrator sometime :)

Well, the semester is coming to an end (hallelujah!), and I have been working hard to finish all of my photoshop assignments. I just finished my Final project for that class and it actually was pretty fun, so I thought I would share it with you all...

Here's a little preview of one of my newest (and most requested) designs for some new MDStudio pendants. This cheerleader, and other sports-related designs, should be available in the shop by the end of the week!

Well, I finally finished my football pigs for art class (pictures still to come)!
And now, for our next project, we are working on a symmetry design. I decided to go with a cowboy theme..here is a preview of a what I'm thinking my design might look like..

Imagine this design on one side of a piece of paper, and once this side is completed i will transfer/copy the image onto the other side of the paper- making a mirror image effect.

Today while brainstorming ideas in class I realized I am much more comfortable making fun colorful characters and using my Wacom tablet/Illustrator than drawing realistic items with a pencil. Its like my brain only thinks in color and cartoon.

This is a work in progress for an assignment in my art class. Basically we are supposed to do rubbings (with an ebony pencil) on lots of different textured items and then cut the rubbings out in different shapes to make a design. Obviously, I decided to go all out.

This week i have been working hard on doing an Etsy Shop makeover for MDStudio. I spent all day yesterday taking, retaking, and tweaking pictures for all of my pendants. I think it was well worth it!

We got the new Rock Band Country Track Pack the other day, and man is it fun! The drums always used to be my favorite part, but now I started trying the singing part with the microphone and i think it has won me over :) Who doesn't love rockin' out to some Deirks Bentley and Brad Paisley?

Wow has this summer been fun!

Another exciting thing going on this month is that me and my husband are moving! Woo! We can not wait- seriously. You have no idea :)

Our big day is finally coming this Friday! I'm so excited!!! We arn't really sending out invitations because its such a small wedding, but my mom is our photographer and she wanted to take a fun picture with our rings and an invitation. So I whipped this one up yesterday afternoon and i think the picture will turn out really cool :)
